I’m sure everyone is wondering how I’m liking Romania so far. It’s kind of hard to say after just 2 days, but I thought I would give you some of my first impressions, some things I expected to happen, and some things I was surprised to happen.
So, ultimately, the first impression is that everyone I will be working with seems to be really friendly. I wasn’t surprised that they would be friendly, but it’s always nice to find out you had correct expectations. Everyone seems very helpful and excited that I am here.
The city doesn’t feel familiar yet, but I can get to the closest shopping center and back without directions/map. I also took a cab to one of the big malls today. It has many western stores, like H&M and Zara. There’s also a Pizza Hut and a Starbucks. I haven’t found the cheap coffee places yet, though. I’m also eager to try some of the restaurants in my neighborhood.
I have had a few surprises. The first was that one of my offices will be in an active psychiatric clinic. I was told all the patients are medicated and the dangerous ones are locked up. I was also told patients rarely make it up to the floor where the offices are. Hopefully I won’t have any stories to report about escaped patients lol.
Another surprise was that I was approached by Jehovah’s Witnesses yesterday while I was out and about. I tried to politely say no, but I still ended up with a tract (and they happened to have one in English). Romania is largely orthodox, and so the JH’s must be a very small minority.
I still have a lot to figure out: Where to take my trash, where the kitchen is in this building (in case I want to cook), where the post office is, etc.
I haven’t taken any pictures yet. But, don’t worry! Pictures will come!
Love you all!! Wish you could come visit (you do have an open invitation if you get a wild hair, of course)
